If my father had his way, I'd be Paul Sweeney, Jr. God forbid I have an identity of my own.

—Lucas Sweeney

Lucas Sweeney is an American race car driver who competes in the ARLA Elite Series. He drives the #8 car full-time for Pearson/Sweeney Motorsports, which his father Paul Sweeney co-owns with Lucas' teammate Andy Pearson.

Despite having been born in Delaware, Sweeney races under the British flag because his father is from the United Kingdom. It is unknown whether or not this was his own decision.

Early Career[edit | edit source]

Sweeney began his racing career at the age of 9, competing in quarter-midget races around the New England area. He held memberships with several quarter-midget clubs, and won countless feature races, as well as the national race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the age of 13. However, he was never able to win a track championship because he never consistently ran at one club.

Per quarter-midget rules, Sweeney was no longer allowed to compete upon his 17th birthday. He immediately took up modifieds, and captured the track championship at Lee USA Speedway in his second year. Sweeney was then given a spot on the Pearson/Sweeney ARLA Truck Series team for the 2007 season, replacing Alex Carson after Carson moved up to the Elite Series.

ARLA Elite Series[edit | edit source]

Sweeney ran his first Elite Series races in 2009, managing a third-place finish at Indianapolis that year, which was the same year that the Indianapolis promoters finally booted ARLA from the track. His performance attracted enough sponsors to justify fielding a car for him full-time in 2010. Sweeney scored his first two victories that season, including the rain race at Watkins Glen.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Sweeney has allegedly had a rocky relationship with his father in the last few years. Sweeney claims that his father tries to continue his own legacy through him, and is trying to discourage him from forming his own identity. Some people say that there is evidence of this on Sweeney's car, whose number is the same typeface as Paul Sweeney's old car. His helmet design is also solid yellow (his father's most well-known car color) with white 8s on the sides.

Sweeney has befriended his teammate Alex Carson, but he does not share Carson's reportedly promiscuous lifestyle.
