Prerace storylines[edit | edit source]

Grant Papp, who famously entered the 1984 race at Rockingham on a five-dollar bet, entered the Talladega race looking to repeat his feat. Again, he did so on a bet – this time, the bet was $10. And, like in 1984, he piloted a car on loan from what is now Pearson/Sweeney Motorsports.

Race two[edit | edit source]

Grant Papp took the lead early and stayed with the lead pack most of the race, hooking up with Allie Riggs to charge to the front with less than five laps to go. However, Riggs hung out Papp to dry in the closing stages, and she ended up taking the win. Papp was shuffled back to finish 10th.

The move was unpopular with the fans, some of whom booed Riggs as she celebrated the win. "Oh, I'm sorry for trying to do my job and win the race. You think I'm just gonna hang back because of your little feel-good story? Get real," Riggs said in her post-race interview. She later received some backlash from the media and her fellow competitors for that remark.

Papp was gracious in defeat.

"I could feel that money in my hands," said Papp, "but I got ditched at the last second." During the interview a man, presumably Papp's friend, walked up to him. Papp reluctantly pulled out a 10-dollar bill and slapped it into his hand. After the man walked away, Papp stated, "I'll let him have this one for now. But we'll see who has the last laugh in time."
